Top Selling 3D Printed Items on Etsy (and the Rule That Decides What Can Sell)

top selling 3D printed items on Etsy and the 2025 own-design rule

Choosing the top selling 3D printed items on Etsy comes down to two questions: which product types buyers pay for, and which of them Etsy still lets you sell. Since June 10, 2025, Etsy only accepts 3D prints made from the seller's own designs, so files from Thingiverse or a paid subscription no longer qualify, even with a commercial license. Etsy does not publish sales counts, so this guide uses the closest public evidence: 30 days of eBay.com sales from the ZIK Marketplace Index, where painted figures, light-up signs and lamps, display stands, cosplay pieces and organizers each sold more than 1,000 times.

Key takeaways

  • Etsy's Creativity Standards now say items made with computerized tools, including 3D printers, "must be produced based on a seller's original design". Prints from Thingiverse, Printables or paid file subscriptions do not qualify, even with a commercial license.
  • Etsy shows a Bestseller badge on listings with high sales volume over the past six months, but it does not publish the threshold. Reviews only come from Etsy orders, so a review count understates sales.
  • On eBay.com, 3D printed items sold 41,120 times in 30 days across 2,556 sellers, at a median listing price of $15.61. That is the best public read on which types people buy.
  • Planters, vases and cookie cutters barely sell on eBay. If they work on Etsy, the demand is Etsy-specific and has to be checked there.
  • Use the eBay Product Research Tool to see whether a design type sells on eBay (sold items, sell-through, sale earnings over 7 to 30 days) before you commit print time to an Etsy launch.

Can you sell 3D prints of other people's designs on Etsy?

No. Since June 10, 2025, a 3D printed item listed on Etsy has to come from a design the seller made. Etsy removed the wording that allowed "a templated design or pattern", which is what covered prints made from other people's files.

Etsy's rule for 3D printed items before and after June 10, 2025: original design or template, then original design only

The change is small on the page and large in practice. Before the update, Etsy's definition of items produced using computerized tools read that they "may be produced based on a seller's original design, or using a templated design or pattern". The new wording, as reported by Value Added Resource, is that they "must be produced based on a seller's original design". The policy itself lives in Etsy's Creativity Standards.

What that removes, according to patent attorney Susan Bradley of Marks & Clerk writing in TCT Magazine: a seller with a commercial subscription to a design site can no longer sell prints of those designs on Etsy. That holds even when the designer gave permission to print and sell. Etsy has not explained the change or said how it treats a third-party design you have modified, so a "remix" is not a safe workaround.

Three consequences for anyone planning an Etsy shop:

  • Free model sites are out. A file released under a Creative Commons NonCommercial license says plainly: "You may not use the material for commercial purposes" (Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0). The Etsy rule goes further and also excludes files you are allowed to sell prints of elsewhere.
  • Licensed characters were always out, and rights owners act. Games Workshop filed 12 claims with the US Copyright Claims Board in 2023 against one creator who, it alleged, converted Warhammer models from a video game into printable files and sold printed versions on Etsy for $65 each (Plagiarism Today). For the license types and the marketplaces that still allow other people's files, see what you can and can't legally sell as 3D prints.
  • Design skill is now the entry ticket. The rule removes every listing built on someone else's file. If you can model your own pieces, you compete only with other designers.

What 3D printed items sell well on Etsy?

Painted figures, light-up signs and lamps, cosplay pieces, display stands and organizers, as your own designs. Etsy hides its sales numbers, so the evidence comes from eBay, where each of these types sold more than a thousand times in 30 days.

The figures come from the ZIK Marketplace Index (ZMI), covering 159.9M tracked US eBay listings, pulled 2026-10-26. They cover eBay.com listings with "3D printed" in the title that sold at least once in the 30 days to October 1, 2026. Printer supplies, printed fabric, digital files and restricted goods are excluded.

These are eBay numbers, used here as a demand signal for the same product types, not a claim about Etsy's own sales. For the eBay side on its own, see the full ranking of best selling 3D printed items on eBay.

Product type (eBay.com) Sales in 30 days Sales at $15 or more Sellers Median price Fit for Etsy under the 2025 rule
Statues, busts and painted figures 1,439 1,002 255 $27.99 Good, if the sculpt is yours
Light-up signs and lamps 1,372 1,327 82 $39.99 Good for original art, weak for logos
Cosplay masks, helmets and armor 1,517 890 239 $24.99 Good for original designs only
Display stands and wall mounts 2,648 1,188 269 $14.99 Strong, usually no IP issue
Home and workshop organizers 1,166 592 214 $16.99 Strong, functional and original
Articulated and fidget toys 1,402 440 381 $11.99 Crowded, low price

A note on scale before the detail. ZMI counts about a dozen 3D printed eBay.com listings that passed 100 sales in the 30 days. Most selling listings move a handful of units. A shop does well on this kind of product by carrying many designs, not by finding one that sells thousands.

Statues, busts and painted figures

Figures carry the second-highest median price in the data, $27.99 on eBay after light-up signs, and 161 sellers made sales at $15 or more. The top eBay sellers in this group sell hand-painted originals and character figures. On Etsy, only the first kind is safe: a sculpt you modeled, painted by you. Painting is also the easiest way to separate your piece from an unpainted print anyone else could run off.

Light-up signs and lamps

This is the highest-priced type in the data, a $39.99 median, and nearly all of its 1,372 eBay sales were at $15 or more. Two warnings go with it. One eBay seller accounted for 797 of those sales, so the demand is concentrated. And many of the best sellers are lightboxes carrying brand logos (beer brands, car makers, airlines), which you cannot sell without a license on Etsy or on eBay.

The open space is your own art: lithophanes (thin prints that show a picture when lit from behind) made from a customer's photo, original illustrated signs, name lights.

median eBay.com price of 3D printed product types, light-up signs highest at $39.99

Cosplay masks, helmets and armor

Cosplay pieces sold 1,517 times on eBay.com in 30 days at a $24.99 median, and the top 25% of listings priced at about $49 or more. Most of the best-selling listings are named characters, which is exactly what both Etsy's rule and copyright law rule out. Original armor sets, generic sci-fi helmets and fantasy masks you designed yourself are the version of this type an Etsy shop can sell.

Display stands and wall mounts

This was the busiest functional type on eBay: 2,648 sales across 269 sellers. Buyers want stands for game consoles, graded card slabs, die-cast cars and full-size football helmets. The appeal for Etsy is that a stand you designed to fit a product is your design, even when the product it holds is branded, as long as the print itself carries no logo. Put the fit in the title ("fits Nintendo Switch") instead.

Home and workshop organizers

Organizers sold 1,166 times on eBay at a $16.99 median, led by drawer inserts, tool holders and storage that fits a specific system. Like stands, they are practical, rarely carry IP risk, and give you a reason to design variations (sizes, colors, labels) that each become a listing.

Articulated and fidget toys

Articulated dragons and flexi animals are the classic beginner's print to sell. The eBay data shows why they are hard to make money on: 381 sellers shared 1,402 sales, more sellers than any other type, at an $11.99 median.

On Etsy the 2025 rule adds a second filter. An original articulated design is still sellable. A print of someone else's popular file is not.

Which 3D printed items barely sell on eBay?

Planters, vases and cookie cutters hardly sell as 3D printed items on eBay.com: 54 planter and vase sales across 11 sellers, and 36 cookie cutter and kitchen sales, in the 30 days to October 1, 2026.

3D printed planters, cookie cutters and miniatures barely sell on eBay.com compared with display stands and fidget toys

That gap is useful information. It means eBay cannot tell you whether these types work, because eBay buyers are not looking for them there. If your designs fall in these groups, every demand check has to happen on Etsy itself, using the signals in the next section. It also means you cannot test these on eBay first and move the winners to Etsy, which is the usual low-risk route for the types in the table above.

Tabletop terrain and miniatures are a smaller case of the same thing. Lists of Etsy best sellers such as Insight Agent's put them near the top, but on eBay.com they sold 296 times across 63 sellers in the same 30 days, at a $15.99 median. Many popular miniatures are also prints of licensed game models, the risk the Games Workshop claims above show.

How can you tell what sells on Etsy?

Etsy gives three public clues: the Bestseller badge, review counts, and its own search pages for best-selling 3D prints. None of them is a sales count, so read them together and treat each one as a floor.

  • The Bestseller badge. Hovering over it shows Etsy's description: the item "has had a high sales volume over the past 6 months" (Growing Your Craft). Etsy has not confirmed the threshold, and the badge disappears while a listing is on sale or carries a Popular Now or Etsy's Pick label. A missing badge does not mean a listing is not selling.
  • Review counts. Buyers can review only items sold through Etsy, within 100 days of the delivery date (Alura). Not every buyer leaves one, so reviews undercount orders. The useful comparison is between listings of the same type. A design with 400 reviews next to similar ones with 20 is outselling them, whatever the true numbers are.
  • Etsy's own search pages. Etsy's own market pages, such as its page for best selling 3D printed items, take several of the top Google results for "top selling 3D printed items on Etsy". They show which designs Etsy surfaces for the phrase. Treat them as a list of what is visible, then check each listing's badge and reviews.
  • Check the design type on eBay, where sales are public. For any type in the table above, eBay's sold data is the most direct number you will find. The free eBay Chrome Extension shows an item's sold history and a seller's sales performance on the eBay page you are already browsing. More on how the three marketplaces differ for this kind of seller is in eBay vs Etsy vs Amazon.

How much does Etsy take from a 3D print sale?

Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and, for US sellers, 3% plus $0.25 for payment processing. Offsite Ads add 12% to 15% on the sales they bring in.

The rates are set in Etsy's fees and payments policy, and ZIK's Etsy fee calculator runs them for you. The listing fee renews every four months, and each renewal costs another $0.20.

A worked example for a painted figure priced at the eBay median for that type:

Line Amount
Item price $28.00
Shipping charged to the buyer $6.00
Listing fee $0.20
Transaction fee, 6.5% of $34.00 $2.21
Payment processing, 3% of $34.00 plus $0.25 $1.27
Etsy fees before Offsite Ads $3.68

For comparison, eBay's final value fee for most categories is 13.6% for sellers without a Store (eBay), charged on the item price plus shipping, plus a $0.40 per-order fee on orders over $10, per the eBay fee calculator. On the same $34.00 that is $5.02.

marketplace fees on the same $34 sale of a 3D printed figure: $3.68 on Etsy before Offsite Ads, $5.02 on eBay

Filament is cheap per piece. ZMI shows single 1 kg PLA spools selling on eBay.com at a median of $21.01, with the most-bought listing at $15.39. A 150 g figure therefore uses roughly $2.31 to $3.15 of filament.

Painting supplies, failed prints, packaging, postage and your time all come on top, so price from your full cost per piece, not from the filament alone. If you are still choosing a platform, Shopify vs Etsy and Amazon Handmade vs Etsy compare the alternatives.

How do you check demand before you print a batch?

Before you print stock for Etsy, search the design type in the eBay Product Research Tool. It shows sold items, sell-through, listings and sale earnings for a keyword over the last 7, 14, 21 or 30 days.

eBay Product Research Tool showing 30-day eBay.com sales for 3D printed items

The screenshot shows eBay.com data, not Etsy data: the eBay Product Research Tool's results for a plain "3d printed" search, run on October 27, 2026. A raw search counts every listing that matches the words, so its totals differ from the cleaned figures in the table above.

Enter a keyword such as "3d printed controller stand", set a price filter at your planned price, and set the sale date to 30 days. You get the number of listings competing for that keyword and how many of them sold. Exclude-phrase and price filters strip out unrelated results, which matters for broad terms like "3d printed dragon".

ZIK's guidance for beginners on eBay is to look for items with at least 2 sales in 7 days (or 6 in 30) and 5 or fewer competitors. On Etsy you cannot measure that directly, but a design type that clears it on eBay has proven buyers, and that is the part of the risk you can remove before you spend print hours.

Two limits to keep in mind. ZIK covers eBay, not Etsy, so it tells you about the product type, not about your Etsy listing. And it tracks listings with at least one sale in the window, so it shows demand that exists today rather than demand you might create with a new design.

The top selling 3D printed items on Etsy come from a handful of types with proven demand: painted figures, light-up art, cosplay pieces, display stands and organizers. Since June 2025, the design has to be yours, which rules out licensed and free files. Etsy will not show you sales counts, so read its badges and reviews, and use eBay's public sales to check the type.

Frequently asked questions

What is the #1 selling item on Etsy?

Etsy does not publish a ranking of its best-selling items or a sales count for any listing. Its own search pages for best-selling 3D printed items show what Etsy surfaces for the phrase, not what sells most. For 3D prints, the Bestseller badge and review counts are the closest public signals.

What is the most sold 3D printed item?

No marketplace publishes a ranking. On eBay.com, the 3D printed listing with the most sales in the 30 days to October 1, 2026 was a $4.50 gooseneck hitch for 1:64-scale toy pickup trucks, with 602 sales. Accessories for die-cast and scale models were the highest-volume type overall, with 7,176 sales, mostly at low prices.

What are the best-selling 3D printed items?

By revenue at $15 or more on eBay.com, the leading types were light-up signs and lamps, painted figures and statues, die-cast accessories, and cosplay masks and helmets. By number of sellers competing, articulated and fidget toys were the most crowded.

Can you sell 3D prints on Etsy from Thingiverse files?

No. Since June 10, 2025, Etsy requires 3D printed items to be produced from the seller's original design, and a commercial license to someone else's file no longer qualifies. Many free model files also carry a NonCommercial license, which forbids selling prints anywhere.
